The desire to paint is there, though time has not been available. To answer that tug in my heart, I have registered for couple of classes in the fall of this year. While these have not jumpstarted my painting, I am not giving up. The New Year will begin with two more classes online classes. I do not know where they will lead while I remain open and curious. In May and June I had an exhibit of my watercolors and sewn pieces. The exhibit was very well received and I was happy about that. I am most grateful for all the friendships that have supported me through out this year.
Beside sewing and dreaming of painting, I spend a lot of time reading, sitting in circles with women, walking and letting myself to accept what is present with open, relaxed, and curious mind. On the whole, I feel blessed. May all of you who visit this blog be well, content and blossoming.Jarinahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03032108440570715251noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9189696246345285047.post-74712986313452976862014-03-27T12:14:00.002-07:002014-03-27T12:14:54.451-07:00Framed fabric patchwork compositions
I am beginning to make small fabric patchwork compositions that I am framing. The frame is 15x12 inches and the window is 7.5x9.5 inches. I found these wonderful bamboo frames in Dan Smith. They come assembled, with glass, matt and ready to be hung. What I love about these frames is that it is so easy to take the back off and put a different piece of art work in.

I love to play with shapes and colors. Fabric is such an interesting medium. The additional challenge of sewing, designing and working with seam allowances, and angles keeps me involved in much different way then watercolors. The creative process involves an element of construction. I also like fabric more then collages. The glue medium was a bit too much for me to handle and enjoy, and of course the paper would stick to my fingers or fly easily off. The show will be opening in May. Now I need to focus on cutting mats for some of my watercolors. That is going to be a learning curve for me.

I just completed this wallhanging. It took me two months and it is the largest piece to date. I was challenged technically, and was able to find solutions. I decided to quilt with invisible thread, and I have learned to be very patient. This piece is going to be exhibited in May-June, along with a selection of my watercolors. I am pleased with the way it turned out. Creating the twenty five blocks was great fun. It actually gave me some ideas for sewing small pieces and framing them. Below are pictures of few of the blocks.

I am trying to expand in size. This was a real enjoyable project, taking about three weeks to complete. I am focusing on getting few wall hangings done for a show in May and June. This is the first one.

Here is the work in progress on the design wall. I love the wall because I can shift pieces around to play with different arrangements.

Below is a photo to see the values.
This is the second pillow I finished recently. I love the red fabric. It has such a rich hue. I do not know where the name came from. The vertical stripes on the front panel remind me of vegetation, but the back panel has horizontal orientation. I suppose I could think of growing sideways that happens to lot of us with aging... or not.
Overwhelmed by events, finally I have completed this design. I am getting adjusted to having less time sewing, not painting, but gardening instead and then recupperating my sore body. The weather is spectacular and so I love being outdoors.
I feel like a proud mama with all of her nine babies. I am taking the pillows to the local gallery and must admit that I feel little sad letting them go. They will be there for couple months to test public interest. I am really pleased with how they turned out and whatever the outcome, they will always be welcomed home.Jarinahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03032108440570715251noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9189696246345285047.post-15491350576822916352013-04-22T17:06:00.001-07:002013-04-22T17:18:24.065-07:00Sweatshirt renewal

I took a class on how to turn a sweatshirt into a jacket. Charlie gave me his old work sweatshirt and cut it all at the seams to place and sew fabrics on top. At times, this was really difficult, because the shirt was stretched out way too much. If I ever do that again, I would use a new sweatshirt, though I promised myself to not do that again. But who knows, I never seem to know where my interest leads me next and so I would not be surprised to begin another one, this time cutting it in the middle of the front to make a jacket, as the teacher wanted us to do. I did not want to go there with weirdly stretched fabric and so it remained a pullover jacket. Below, is the beginning of the back. The sleeves are still attached and I did have to cut them off eventually, because they would not lie flat when the whole thing was opened up for sewing.
Finally, I was able to sew again. I have not been feeling well and now I feel better. I am grateful. I do not have much to say, except having regrets that I have almost used up all the dark fabric with the leaves on it. I am not able to replenish the supply. Alas, that is what happens in the world of batiks, so I am told.
The other day, I wanted to learn how to work with triangles. I sewed a few squares using four triangles in each. I enjoyed the precision it required for the points to meet. That was fun, but the result was very boring to me. The greatest fun came from slicing the squares and making something more interesting. The red lines reminded me of San Francisco Golden Gate bridge and thus the title. The back panel is below.
It has been a while since I posted. I got sick mid January, and it is only this week that I am beginning to feel like I have crawled out of a hole. I have been sewing little in February, as energy allowed me to. Red has been the color I have indulged myself with. I finally got the construction committed to my memory. I also decided to do the borders differently. So far, I am still enjoying the process. The back panel is below. And as for my kitty, all is well. The lesion on his back disappeared with application of an ointment. What a relief.
Another pillow done. A local gallery is interested in selling my pillows. I have about four months to make about a dozen of them, and so I am focusing more on how to get them done easier. Slowly, I am getting it. I still continue to enjoy the process of sewing and what a perfect thing to do when it is dark and cold outside.
Blue is what this pillow is about. I have been dreaming about a cabin by the blue sea, with warm sandy beach, something like Costa Rica was many years ago. I have been dreaming of walking on the beach and getting my feet wet as I listen to the waves... it almost is as if I could be there, but not quite. Sewing this pillow got me into the mood of that tropical warmth though. It did not hurt to have the house warm.
It is a beautiful day today. Cool, sunny and delightful. We just finished a great walk through the woods. it is so incredibly green in places. This is certainly not reflected in this piece. I loved the indigo colored fabric. It reminds me of midnight darkness illuminated by a full moon....

The holidays and short dark days are not very productive for me. The other day, I found an afternoon to piece together small bits of strips and played with making medallions. I like doing this.

Now I have some material to play with. The two dark blue pieces in the first picture are close to completion and I will send the picture of this pillow case soon.
I am continuing to focus on sewing. The studio in the garden is getting colder and colder. The light is getting dimmer as winter approaches. How wonderful to have a sewing room in the house that is toasty warm.

I had fun doing this one. The triangular shapes are from a rescue of scraps I found in the garbage can of the fabric store that I go to once a month to be with a circle of women. What an exciting find! I am grateful to the woman that deposited the triangular shapes there.

As you possibly can see, the triangles stimulated my imagination to create huts, windows and pillars.

The back panel has only a window framed by vegetation. Hawaii is a wonderful spot on Earth. I used a zipper for closure visible on the bottom. The pillow panels are quilted and sewn together. The binding is excess fabric from the front panel folded over and this time hand stitched to the back. I discovered loving to hand stitch, so relaxing.Jarinahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03032108440570715251noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9189696246345285047.post-57338130669751163882012-11-22T11:58:00.000-08:002012-11-22T11:58:58.227-08:00Garden

It is Thanksgiving day today, quiet and the garden outside is full of exquisite muted colors. But this pillow design reminds me of the summer colors I find in my garden.
I am finding that focusing on the unseen aspects of the pillow captivate me as well. I think I spent more time with this panel. I did insert zipper as a closure toward the bottom. I am still struggling with the closure aspect of construction and think that I will explore "invisible zipper ". I was advised to not use velcro. The flap construction I used on the previous pillow hid the zipper with a flap, but when I put the pillow form into it, it spread out and so that did not work as a solution. One possibility would be to use buttons, but I am not crazy about that option. I have been watching You-tube for zipper placement tutorials and will continue to do so to achieve a more satisfactory result.Jarinahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03032108440570715251noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9189696246345285047.post-27413467971237465512012-11-12T12:09:00.001-08:002012-11-12T12:09:37.103-08:00"Portal", 15x15 pillow case

I tried a new construction on this pillow. Because the front and back panels are thick, I decided to sew them together with right sides up, and use the extra fabric from the front panel to fold over to the back to create a mitered border. I like the idea of having a small flange, making the pillow size 15x15 inches
This is the back side. The photo looks bleached out. I do have trouble with taking photos still. On this one, I used zipper for a closure. It is hidden by a flap of fabric at the bottom. I am thinking to use velcro strip on the next one.
I just completed a pair of pillow cases. I am really pleased how they turned out. One of them is going to be auctioned off on Saturday. I have a hard time deciding which one. They do look good together.

I am planning to make more, as I think they look good in set of two's or threes. Any thoughts on this?

The "Treasure Chest" sold at the auction for $100. Great!!!Jarinahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03032108440570715251noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9189696246345285047.post-60236272620286892122012-10-24T12:06:00.000-07:002012-10-24T12:06:16.721-07:00The fifth pillow completes the setI have been very busy. The fifth pillow is large: 20x30 inches. It took quite a while to get all the paper piecing together. The weather was beautiful as well and so it was more important to take walks outside. I got to actually rediscover some wonderful trails in the neighboring state park and walked about an hour almost every day.

Studio time at this point is non-existent. I am so preoccupied with patch-working. After completing the pillows to re-invent the forty year old sectional, I had loads of scraps of fabric and so I began to sew these together without a plan. What fun!!! and what freedom to do whatever I wanted to:
I need to make a donation to a fundraising auction and so I took the lower right medallion and began to enlarge it to make a pillow case for a 14x14 inches pillow. I just finished the front panel and all I need to do is finish the back and insert the zipper into the lower seam line. I have learned a great deal about constructing this pillow case and I think that I am getting the gestalt of how it all goes together. I wanted it well finished inside, with no raw edges showing:
I had just completed, or so I think, this little piece. I had lot of fun with it, as it evolved slowly. Mostly,

I was really intrigued by the contrast of temperature and thus the title. The hot and the cold contrasts of day and night temperatures, the vegetation changing in appearance, the slow shutting down of vital functions I am witnessing as Autumn progresses, all speak of winter arriving. I am finding lot of beauty in this transition. Creating this piece got me to really appreciate the vitality that continues even through the dark and cold months to come.
Here is a progression of this piece:
